A rare example of French fiction translated in Russia during the 1830s. The volume introduced Russian readers to a novel by Joseph Méry, an author whom his contemporaries regarded as one of the precursors of crime fiction.
Lively in pace and deftly plotted, the work reflects the taste for intrigue characteristic of French literature of the period. Published in Moscow by N. Stepanov's printing house, this edition is an interesting record of the publishing and translation culture of the reign of Nicholas I.
A rare and significant copy for the history of the reception of Western fiction in Russia.
