The Plant Pulses Like a Heart, Among Men and Machinery
This is neither a workshop nor a construction site, but an orchestra in which the parts of the plant pulse like the valves of a gigantic heart, while the men are merely shadows fused into the rhythm of the gears.
The lithograph fragments space into wedges of light and chasms of shadow, transforming the conveyor belt into an endless Möbius strip, where the worker's hand becomes indistinguishable from the lever of the press.
Black smoke and white steam intertwine as graphic hieroglyphs proclaiming progress, yet the mechanical agony of flesh resounds within that cry. Here industry devours time, leaving on the paper only the imprint of steel and a silent question: who is truly the builder and the producer, humanity or the machine? This work was exhibited in «Graphic Art of the Soviet and Post-Soviet Period» and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue. Germany, 2025.
Artist biography
Volodymyr Kutkin (1926-2001) was born in Zhytomyr and grew up in Kyiv. He studied at the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv Art School and later entered the graphics faculty of the Kyiv State Art Institute.
After political repression interrupted his studies, he was rehabilitated and completed the institute with distinction in 1959. Kutkin worked in easel and book graphics as well as monumental-decorative art, joined the Ukrainian artists' union in 1961 and became a People's Artist of Ukraine in 2001.
