An antique oval bas-relief depicting a classical figure in flowing drapery, crafted from terracotta. The smooth lines and deep relief lend the composition a refined, Neoclassical appearance, while the natural texture of the fired clay emphasizes the noble simplicity of the material. 19th century.
This bas relief is a fine plastic replica of the painting "La Sibilla Persica" by Guercino (at Pinacoteca Capitolina). As the painting was in high esteem and commercially a success during the lifetime of the painter, there exist several copies of it, some by the author himself and some under collaboration of his studio. The thorough and skillful execution of the facial features and the folded garment lets us assume that the author of our artifact had close contact with one of the versions of the original painting. Presumably, it was commissioned by an owner of such painting as a small mobile version for movable exhibitions in private circle or long travels. Sibyls are Greek/Roman prophetesses from the antiquity who were regarded in the Renaissance as foreshadowing the coming of Christ. Since time immemorial, tradition has ascribed talismanic features to the Sibyl-motives and therefore they were often used as amulets for travels.
