List of Factories and Plants of the Russian Empire
List of Factories and Plants of the Russian Empire. Compiled from official information of the Department of Industry of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, edited by V. E. Varzar. — St. Petersburg: Printing House of V. F. Kirshbaum, 1912. — 314, LXXXIX p.
An official statistical reference book prepared from data collected by factory inspectors during the general survey of the state of industry, completed by the beginning of 1909. The publication covers not only European Russia but also Siberia, Central Asia and the Caucasus — thus exhaustively listing the factories and plants of the entire Empire. The material is arranged in 14 groups of production, and within the groups by provinces in alphabetical order; for each establishment the name of the firm or owner, location, number of workers, type of engine and annual output are indicated. At the end of the book an alphabetical list of factories by the names of the owners is appended.
This is a fundamental primary source of industrial statistics of the late Russian Empire. Copies in good condition are rarely encountered, since the reference book was used as a working tool.
Vasily Egorovich Varzar (1851–1940) was a Russian statistician and economist, one of the founders of industrial statistics in Russia. He was the organizer and director of the first complete surveys of factory and plant industry, and the author of capital works on industrial statistics.
