"Institutions. A Textbook of the History and System of Roman Civil Law."
Translation from the German edition by G. A. Barkovsky.
St. Petersburg: The edition is sold at the Legal Bookstore of N. K. Martynov, 1908.
This edition represents a classic textbook on Roman civil law, written by the outstanding German jurist Rudolf Sohm (1841–1917). The book "Institutions" (Institutionen) is a systematic course on the history and system of Roman law, which was repeatedly reprinted in Germany and translated into many European languages. The uniqueness of the book lies in the fact that the translation from the 12th German edition (one of the last published during the author's lifetime) represents the most complete and up-to-date version of Sohm's work at that time, and also reflects the level of teaching of Roman law in Russia in the early 20th century. For legal historians and civil law scholars, this is a most valuable source.
Rudolf Sohm (1841–1917) — an outstanding German jurist, legal historian, and specialist in Roman and canon law, one of the greatest representatives of German legal science of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
