Bibliographic rarity
The two-volume edition of 1907 is a classic university textbook used by several generations of Russian pharmacists and physicians. The author's work went through a total of 14 editions — from the first in 1904 to the posthumous one in 1933. In the preface to the posthumous edition (1925), Academician I. P. Pavlov particularly noted: "In pharmacology... the analysis of the physical action of a medicinal substance and the correlation of this action with the etiology and symptoms of pathological conditions must be of primary importance. And in this case this has been achieved to the highest degree."
Nikolai Pavlovich Kravkov (1865–1924) was one of the founders of Russian pharmacology, a professor of the Imperial Military Medical Academy, and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1920). He was the first to propose combined intravenous anesthesia (hedonal with chloroform), which became known as "Russian anesthesia."
Throughout his career he headed the Department of Pharmacology at the Military Medical Academy from 1899 to 1924 and created a large scientific school of pharmacologists.
