Elevator
The three-colour lithograph «Elevator» is founded on the contrast between the geometry of industrial architecture and atmospheric depth.
The first colour layer, in a warm grey, defines the imposing cylinders of the silos, which rise like gigantic columns. The second colour builds up the walls of the receiving area, rendering with great sensitivity the texture of old concrete illuminated by the southern sun.
The third and most important layer is devoted to the sky and the long shadows crossing the buildings, accentuating their monumentality. The separation of the colours gives the lithograph a distinctive vibration: the lines do not blend, but overlap, creating a sense of the steppe's hot, dry air. The result is not merely a portrait of a grain-storage facility, but an austere visual poem devoted to the steppe, labour and time, captured in rigorous draughtsmanship and noble chromatic harmony. This work was exhibited in «Graphic Art of the Soviet and Post-Soviet Period» and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue. Germany, 2025.
Artist biography
Zinoviy Ketsalo (1919-2010) was a Ukrainian graphic artist and painter from the Lviv region. He studied at the Lviv State Industrial School and at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts before developing a long exhibition career from the late 1950s.
A member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, Ketsalo became People's Artist of Ukraine in 1995. His work includes portraits, landscapes of Polissia, Prykarpattia and Crimea, still lifes, thematic compositions and book illustrations.
