In this lithograph, Heorhii Yakutovych transforms an episode from the history of Kyiv into a composition of great monumentality.
In the foreground, the figure of Prince Volodymyr dominates the scene with a solemn, sculptural presence, while the Church of the Tithes emerges in the background as a symbol of the establishment of the new faith.
The bold contrast between light and shadow and the powerful graphic rhythm give the work intense expressive force.
In the sky, two birds locked in combat introduce a symbolic element evoking the conflict between the pagan world and Christianity, adding a profound spiritual dimension to the composition.
Artist biography
Georgiy Yakutovych (1930-2000) was a Ukrainian graphic artist, illustrator, linocut, woodcut and etching master, and film artist. Born in Kyiv, he studied at the Kyiv Art Institute under Illarion Pleshchynskyi and Vasyl Kasiyan from 1948 to 1954.
He taught at the Kyiv Art Institute, became a People's Artist of Ukraine and received the Taras Shevchenko State Prize. His work is central to Ukrainian twentieth-century graphic art and book illustration.
