«Shevchenko with a Kazakh Boy».
This linocut by Vasyl Kasiyan, executed in 1960, is devoted to one of the most significant episodes from Taras Shevchenko's period of exile in Kazakhstan. The artist depicts the poet in military uniform beside a young Kazakh boy, evoking the profound human bond that Shevchenko formed with the local population. Inspired by drawings made during his exile in Novopetrovske, the work bears witness to the poet's fundamental role in the emergence of artistic representations of the Kazakh people.
This work was exhibited in «Graphic Art of the Soviet and Post-Soviet Period» and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue. Germany, 2025.
Artist biography
Vasyl Kasiyan (1896-1976) was a major Ukrainian graphic artist, art historian and teacher. He studied at the Prague Academy of Arts, worked in printmaking, drawing and illustration, and later taught in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
Kasiyan became People's Artist of the USSR, a full member of the USSR Academy of Arts and a laureate of major Ukrainian state prizes. His graphic work is closely tied to Ukrainian literary and historical subjects, including Taras Shevchenko.
