Nadiia Lopukhova
A Winter Landscape of Contemplative Calm
In this watercolour by Lopukhova, the winter landscape becomes an image of stillness and contemplation.
The tree trunks, arranged in a regular rhythm, guide the eye towards the outline of a small village barely visible through the haze. The restrained palette and delicate transparent washes evoke an atmosphere of silence, in which nature preserves suspended time and a sense of intimate solitude.
This work was exhibited in «Graphic Art of the Soviet and Post-Soviet Period» and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue. Germany, 2025.
Artist biography
Nadiia Lopukhova (1928-2014) was a Ukrainian graphic artist, illustrator and book artist. She studied at the Kyiv State Art Institute from 1948 to 1954 and graduated from the book graphics workshop with an excellent diploma project.
From the mid-1950s she worked with Ukrainian publishing houses including Molod, Dytvydav/Veselka and Dnipro. Lopukhova participated in republican and all-Union exhibitions and is known for bright, lyrical illustrations and works of easel graphics preserved in Ukrainian museum collections.
