Mykola P. Hlushchenko

«Crimson Sunset», watercolour on paper, 13.5 × 21 cm.

Mykola Hlushchenko's watercolour «Crimson Sunset» is a brilliant example of his Impressionist style, in which the true protagonist is the pure energy of colour and light. Executed in intense scarlet tones, the work conveys the sensation of a fleeting moment and a blazing sky, characteristic of the artist's mature period. Rather than depicting details, the painter captures the mood of nature, transforming the sunset into a vibrant and intense symphony of colour.

Signed «Hlushchenko» by the artist at lower right.

Mykola Petrovych Hlushchenko (1901-1977) was one of the most important Ukrainian painters of the Soviet era, awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR and the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR. His life combined art and intelligence work in a remarkable way. Following his studies at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and a period in Paris, he developed an original Impressionist style that earned him recognition in Europe. Landscape became his preferred genre, to which he devoted thousands of works celebrating the Ukrainian countryside and the places he visited on his travels. At the same time, from 1926 he worked as a secret agent for Soviet intelligence under the code name «Yarema»; thanks to information he supplied, the Soviet government learned in January 1940 of preparations for Germany's attack. The artist returned to the USSR in 1936 and lived and worked in Kyiv from 1944 until his death, leaving an extensive artistic legacy.
