Ukrainian naive painting, in its landscapes and scenes of everyday life, is distinguished by a poetic and harmonious vision of the world, in which reality and imagination coexist naturally. Free from academic conventions, self-taught artists depicted an ideal universe of whitewashed country houses, flowering gardens, windmills, ponds and bright sunshine. Each element takes on a symbolic meaning: the house represents the hearth, water represents life, and the mill represents work and prosperity.

Scenes of rural life - gatherings at the well, the harvest, traditional textiles laid out to dry - convey a sense of serenity and authenticity. Intense colours, simplified forms and the absence of academic perspective lend these works a spontaneity and expressive power that have won admirers throughout the world.

As Pablo Picasso said in Paris in 1954, referring to Kateryna Bilokur: «If we had an artist of such calibre, the whole world would be talking about her».
