The Patriotic War in Russian Writers
N.V. Karabanov, The Patriotic War of 1812 as Portrayed by Russian Writers: A Historical Reader with Numerous Illustrations, Reproductions of Paintings by Russian and Foreign Artists, and Portraits of the Heroes of 1812. Moscow, V.M. Sablin edition, 1912. [8], 343 pp., [3] portrait plates: ill.
One of the most distinguished pre-revolutionary editions published to mark the centenary of the Patriotic War of 1812. The compiler, N.V. Karabanov, brought together poetry and prose by Russian writers, from direct witnesses to the events - V.A. Zhukovskij, D.V. Davydov, F.N. Glinka, and K.N. Batjushkov - to their great literary heirs: A.S. Pushkin, M.Ju. Lermontov, and L.N. Tolstoj.
The volume is richly illustrated with reproductions of paintings by Russian and foreign artists and portraits of the heroes of 1812, giving it the character of a true artistic chronicle of the war.
An edition now rarely encountered and of considerable interest to collectors of military-historical literature, memoirs, and Russian Napoleonic iconography.
