Petr P. Sushchinskij

P.P. Sushchinskij, The Woman Physician in Russia: An Account of the Decade of the Women's Medical Courses, 1872-1882. St Petersburg, N.A. Lebedev Printing House, 1883. 50 pp.

An important historical edition written by Petr Petrovich Sushchinskij, full professor at the Imperial Military Medical Academy and an instructor at the Women's Medical Courses.

The volume provides a precise account of the first decade of these courses, which opened the path to higher medical education for Russian women. The author describes the graduates' achievements, as well as the difficulties of the period: the absence of a clearly defined legal status and social prejudice toward the figure of the 'woman scholar.'

Printed in St Petersburg by the N.A. Lebedev printing house, the book is a significant document in the history of women's education and women's professional rights in nineteenth-century Russia.
