In a lively and accessible form, the volume traces the childhood and youth of Russian rulers from Peter I to Alexander II, showing how family surroundings, education, and tutors contributed to the formation of their characters.
Particular attention is given to the imperial tutors, from Nikita Zotov to Vasilij Zhukovskij, and to the everyday atmosphere of the Romanov household. The work is thus a rare historical and pedagogical record, enriched with numerous portraits and illustrations.
