A Romantic poem by Fedor Glinka, published in 1830 and inspired by the historical fate of the mother of Tsar Michail Romanov, who was banished to Lake Onega during the Time of Troubles.
The work interweaves historical legend, folk tradition, and evocative descriptions of the natural world of the Russian North: forests, fires, mist-shrouded lakes, and landscapes filled with mystery. The solitary exile, the peasant Nikanor, and the enigmatic hermit monk bring to life a poetic narrative with an epic, fairy-tale tone, enriched by motifs from Karelian-Finnish mythology.
One of the significant works of Russian Romanticism in the age of Pushkin, admired for its poetic discovery of the Russian North.
